How To Prepare for Your HVAC Installation
Congratulations on choosing your new HVAC system! The next important step for your HVAC is installation day, which is probably fast approaching. To help your HVAC installation go as smoothly as possible, our team compiled a checklist of things you can do at home to prepare for the big day:
Clear the Installation Area
Clearing the space around the install area before technicians arrive seems like common sense, but few homeowners do this helpful step. We recommend moving furniture, decorations, or any other items blocking access.
For the outdoor HVAC units, ensure the installation areas have at least 2 to 3 feet of clearance for proper airflow. This involves removing any plants, bushes, or outdoor furniture.
Turn Off Utilities in Advance
Turning off the power source for your new HVAC system, whether it’s gas or electric, saves everyone time. You can do this about 10 minutes before your technicians arrive.
Gas-Powered HVAC Systems
To turn off your gas supply, you’ll need to find the main gas shut-off valve, which is usually near your gas meter on the side or front of your house. Note that it could be inside a cabinet meter.
To stop the gas flow to your building, first take note that the valve will be “on” in a vertical position. To turn off the gas, simply turn the valve to the horizontal position.
Electric-Powered HVAC Systems
To turn off the electric power to your building, you’ll need to turn off the main circuit breaker, which is located in your main electrical panel, typically in the basement or near the laundry. The main circuit breaker is usually located at the top of the circuit panel as a lever or a double-wide switch.
You can safely turn it to the “OFF” position a few minutes before your HVAC installers arrive.

Clear away all obstructions to the breaker box so your technicians can access your electrical system easily. During the installation process, your installers will need to work with your breaker box to connect the new system.
